If you read our last post on how much a commercial should cost, you will remember that we immediately changed the question to what a commercial should do. This could also be phrased like this “why make a video in the first place?”
Socrates said that “the unexamined life is not worth living.” Far from devaluing life, Socrates is challenging us to ask why we are here and what makes the best life. In this ted talk and in his excellent book, Start With Why, Simon Sinek explores how great leaders and brands invariably have a strong sense of why they are in existence. I feel like this book along with The Lean Start Up should be required reading for anyone either entering into business or that is in charge of steering the course of a business. The Idea that a business should exist for a higher purpose than just to make money is not a new one but these recent books also draw on scientific studies and market data to back up the claims. So if we don’t already trust the teachings of Socrates or Jesus on the subject then it is also great to see it supported by a graph:)
All joking aside this is a very inspiring talk! And extremely useful when thinking about why to make a video. Some marketers like to talk about “Emotional Marketing” stating that it is much more important to connect with your potential client emotionally rather than by presenting a rational list of features. This is true…but is only truly effective, in the long term, if is connecting the emotions to something true about the core identity of the product or business.

Examining our lives so that we can make an effective video, can help us get an inspiring look at why we started a business or cause in the first place:) and that makes everything in life worth a little more!
